How to Apply as a Graduate Student

To apply to a graduate-level or advanced degree program at UW-Stout, you'll need to complete the general UW System Graduate School Application, your program-specific application requirements, and the additional application requirements below.

Submit payment by credit card at the end of the online application process.
Please note the application fee is non-refundable.

We'll need the following transcripts as a part of your application. Please note that official transcripts must be received directly from the issuing institution. UW-Stout transcripts do not need to be requested.

After submitting the UW System Application and obtaining your Application ID, use this ID to finalize your application on the Collection Site.

Graduate Application Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do you waive application fees?

Application fee waivers are not available for graduate-level applications. A non-refundable application fee of $56 is required for submission.

Do you offer scholarships?

The Stout University Foundation supports scholarships for full-time or part-time degree-seeking graduate students. It's easy to apply, one application will automatically qualify you for any foundation scholarship which you meet the criteria for.

Do you require GRE scores? No, GRE scores are not required. How can I apply for a Graduate Assistantship (GA)?

⁠Graduate Assistantships (GAs) are paid positions at UW-Stout where you also have the opportunity to gain valuable professional experience. The process for finding a GA position here is a bit different than on some campuses. Openings are posted on Handshake by academic programs and administrative units, and the process of searching for one and applying is much like finding any other kind of employment.
You must meet all of the following criteria to hold a Graduate Assistantship (GA):
• admitted to a graduate degree program (dual-level and non-degree seeking students are not eligible),
• enrolled in at least six graduate credits each term, and
• maintain a GPA of at least 3.0 each term.

How can I check the status of my application?
  1. Visit access.uwstout.edu.
  2. Log in using your UW-Stout username and password.
  3. Select Self Service after logging in to Access Stout.
  4. Navigate to Admission -> Application Status at the bottom of the screen.
  5. On this page, you will find important application information such as your entry term, program, plan, and application date.
  6. Below that, you will see any outstanding checklist items necessary to complete your application. If you have concerns about resolving any items, please email us with your campus ID included.

No need to continuously check this page for your official acceptance to UW-Stout. We will notify you via email and send you a formal letter.

Do you accept unofficial transcripts?

No, we do not accept unofficial transcripts. Transcripts must be official and sent directly to us from the institution.

Can I transfer graduate credits?

Graduate credit earned at another graduate school may be considered toward the fulfillment of program requirements. The transfer credit total is limited to one-third of the minimum credits required for graduation from the program. To be applied to program requirements, transfer credits must be approved by the Program Director.

Can I send you my transcripts for review prior to admission?

No, we do not accept transcripts from students. Before an admission decision can be made, we need to have your official transcript on file, and it must be sent to us directly from the institution.
